Information on the 2018 National French Contest!

It is that time of year again, not for football or Homecoming, but to register for the National French Contest!  Every year, the American Association of Teachers of French organizes this annual event to recognize and reward student achievement.  Last year, more than 78,000 students in grades 1-12 participated; many earned national prizes.
All students of French are invited to participate in the contest.  This year, the FLES contest will be administered in the Southern California chapter from Feb 11-24, 2018; students in levels 1-5 will take the exam between March 1-9, 2018.  The dates listed on the AATF website are slightly different, but these are the dates chosen for our chapter.  Any exams given outside these dates, especially those done electronically, will not be counted.  If there is a problem, please contact me right away so that we might find a solution.
As in the past two years, the National French Contest will be administered in two ways.  It is preferable to use the online testing platform – students can use any device to take the exam, which lasts 60 minutes, is multiple choice and includes a listening section.  One advantage to this testing is that the teachers can remain in the classroom with his/her students and multi-level classes are easier to administer.  There is still the option in 2018 of paper and pencil exams, but the registration date is much earlier and there is no late option (see below).  The paper and pencil exam will also require the purchase of CDs.
The cost per student for the exam is $4.50 for AATF members, and $8.00/student for non-members.  This cost includes a supplement of $1 which helps defray the cost of the Distribution des Prix, our SoCal chapter award ceremony, which will take place in May.
More information on the National French Contest is available here: http://www.frenchteachers.org/concours/Teachers/teachers.htm
·         The deadline for teachers using paper and pencil exams is December 15, 2017this is a hard deadline and not additional orders for paper and pencil tests can be made after this date.
·         The early bird deadline for teachers using online testing is January 15, 2018.  (additional orders can be made but may require late fee)
·         Online registration for both types of exams is http://www.frenchteachers.org/concours/Resources/Contest%20Registration%20Information.html  Please note all requirements needed to register. All money goes directly to the National, which also makes all final decisions.  Any questions that you have can be directly addressed to me (socal.grandconcours@gmail.com); if I don’t have the answer, I will find it for you!

I look forward to working with you and your students for a successful National French Contest, and I also hope to see you and your students at our Remise des Prix in May, 2018!
