Middle Schools/High Schools - Scènes - Le Misanthrope - UCLA (Avril 2019)

Announcement: I would like to invite you and your students to UCLA to a unique French cultural event this coming April (Wednesday April 10th and Thursday April 11th) in the afternoon. My goal is to promote interest in French literature and culture, as well as greater contact between UCLA and our secondary schools.
In collaboration with Professor Michael Hackett in our Theater Arts department, we are sponsoring a theater production of Molière’s Le Misanthrope. We will present a few scenes (rather than the whole play), so that the students can see the same set of scenes performed in three different ways to highlight the interpretive choices open to directors, actors, readers. We will ask the audience to propose yet alternative interpretations and the actors will improvise, acting literally on your suggestions! A discussion of the interpretive choices will follow.
Because we are making this event interactive, it would be wonderful if you could have your students read the play, or at least the scenes, in advance. (The scenes will be performed in English but we may work with two different translations to get a sense of the differences).

If you would be interested in having your students take a tour of our campus before the event, I would be happy to arrange that for you.
If this event interests you, please let me know which date you would like to reserve. Please let me know if you think you can fit some scenes from Le Misanthrope into your curriculum. That would be ideal! If you have any suggestions about structuring this event, I would greatly welcome your thoughts. April now seems like a long way off, but we need to begin planning now. I very much look forward to connecting with you and your students.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions: Melzer@humnet.ucla.edu.

Sincerely,
Sara Melzer, Professor
French and Francophone Studies, UCLA, Los Angeles, CA 90095

Can you be more precise about the time of day? Getting to UCLA is a bit of a challenge... I'm going to see what we can do but this might be tricky.
